Check Your Surface

The surface must be steel or another magnetic metal. These hangers will not hold to drywall, plaster, wood, glass, aluminum or many grades of stainless steel. A quick test: if a refrigerator magnet sticks firmly, a magnetic hanger will work there. Flat, smooth steel gives the best hold. How to Hang Items With Magnetic Picture Hangers

• Wipe the steel surface and the back of the hanger clean. Dust and grit reduce holding power and can scratch.
• Place the hanger flat against the steel at the height you want. Set it in place rather than sliding it into position.
• Hang your picture, sign or calendar on the hook and check that it holds before you let go.
• For wide or heavy pieces, use two hangers spaced apart so the item hangs level and the load is shared.
• To move or remove a hanger, tip it away from the surface from one edge instead of dragging it across the steel.

For lightweight signs and posters, you can skip the hanger and back the item with adhesive magnetic strips instead.

Care

• Wipe the hanger with a soft cloth to remove dust.
• Keep the magnetic face clean and free of metal shavings or grit.
• Store spare hangers flat, and keep them separated so they do not knock into each other.
